• Kolkata tourist among two killed in Sikkim accident

  • SILIGURI: One person of a five-member family from Kolkata died in an accident in Sikkim's Singtam district after the vehicle they were travelling in hurtled down the mountain slope and plunged into the Rani river at Sangkhola. The four other family members were seriously injured

    The driver of the Sikkim-registered commercial vehicle was also killed.

    The family from Chowdhury para in north Kolkata, who had gone to the Hills for a holiday, was travelling from Siliguri to Gangtok, when the accident took place around 5am on Saturday.

    The deceased, Rabindra Nath Paul (72), was travelling with Tapas Paul (33), Krishna Paul (36), Mira Paul (60) and a four-year-old girl when the driver lost control and the vehicle fell down a gorge and into the river. The bodies of the deceased were recovered from the river. Paul and the driver's bodies have been kept in the mortuary of the district hospital in Singtam.

    The injured were first taken to the nearby district hospital in Singtam, from where they were later shifted to Central Referral Hospital in Gangtok.
