  • Kolkata: Calcutta High Court on Tuesday gave a temporary reprieve to BJP’s Basirhat candidate Rekha Patra from any police action. Patra had been named in an FIR on May 12 for attacks on Trinamool Congress functionary Dilip Mallick’s home in Sandeshkhali.

The HC said it was quite unfortunate that Sandeshkhali police could not nab the culprits involved in the clash in the area even after recovering the arms they were carrying.“Why are anti-socials still at large? Who had removed the guard rails placed in front of the police station? Police should find out who led the siege to Mallick’s home,” Justice Jay Sengupta said.

Making the observations, the judge stayed the FIR against Patra for a month and fixed the next date of hearing on June 12. The court directed police not to take steps against Patra till June 14.

A section of Sandeshkhali women, allegedly led by Patra, attacked a TMC activist on the allegation that the person along with others were making “fake videos” to confuse people over “sexual torture” complaints against Sheikh Shahjahan and his associates.

Police arrested four people in this connection and started a case against Patra.
