  • Bangladesh MP Anwar Ul Azim, who has been missing for the past nine days from Kolkata, where he rented a luxury flat in New Town, is believed to have been murdered.

CID IG Akhilesh Kumar Chaturvedi on Wednesday said, “Anwar Ul Azim Anar has been missing since May 13. His daughter had tried to contact him but failed. A missing complaint was then registered here at the Baranagar police station. An SIT was formed to start an investigation and in the meantime, the West Bengal government got a letter from the Ministry of External Affairs to investigate the case. Today, we got an input that he has been murdered. We are trying our level best to solve this case. The CID is investigating the matter.”

Police sources said that blood stains were found at Azim’s flat. However, the police are still searching for the MP’s body. They have collected CCTV footage from the flat.

The police said the legislator of Bangladesh’s ruling Awami League came to Kolkata on May 12 through the Gende border in West Bengal’s Nadia district and first went to the house of one of his friends at Mondolpara in Baranagar.

Three relatives who accompanied Azim informed the police that he had first told them that he had come to Kolkata for medical treatment and later said that he had an important meeting in Delhi.

After he went missing, his family members in Bangladesh filed a missing complaint with police there. His friend in Baranagar filed a missing complaint in Kolkata on May 18.

After the Bangladesh police informed the Bidhannagar police commissionerate of the MP’s disappearance, the latter detained three people in the case. “Our investigation is on. We have got leads,” said a senior officer of the police commissionerate.

Speaking to reporters in Bangladesh, Inspector-General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun said, “Indian police and we are jointly working on this. We are cooperating with Indian police. We have not been informed that he has been murdered. We will confirm after we get details from Indian police. He was missing.”

Anwar Ul Azim was elected from the Jhenaidah-4 parliament seat.
