  • A day after a TMC worker was killed in Mahishadal, West Bengal Chief Minister and party supremo Mamata Banerjee on Saturday hit out at the BJP over the incident and said her party would “take revenge politically”.

The CM made the remarks while addressing a poll rally at Haroa in North 24 Parganas district. In an apparent reference to the BJP, Banerjee said, “Even today, they did gundami (hooliganism) at Nandigram and Khejuri. They killed our main man in Mahishadal for rigging (votes) in Purba Medinipur. I will take revenge for this act politically.”
On Friday night, a TMC worker was allegedly in Mahishadal in Purba Medinipur district while he was returning home after attending a party meeting. Police said five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. The TMC has accused BJP of being behind the incident.

On Thursday, BJP workers took to streets in protest following the death of a woman party worker in Nandigram.
At another rally in Rajarhat, Banerjee targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his recent remarks. “If anyone said he will give Rs 15 lakh and ultimately gives (you) nothing, he is 420. If anybody says, he will give jobs to 4 crore people but did nothing then, he is 420. Modibabu in our language is 420. Now, he is saying, he has no biological parents. God sent him to do people’s work.”

During an election meeting in support of the TMC candidate from Basirhat, Haji Nurul Islam, Banerjee criticised TMC’s Minakhan MLA Usharani Mandol amid reports that the legislator had been in contact with the BJP. “She (Mondal) will continue to be a Trinamool legislator. Yet, she will not attend any party meetings. I will not accept Usha Rani Mondal unless she apologises. I have no connection with her. I do not want people like her in my party. She and her husband are trying to sell the party which I will never accept,” Banerjee added.

Stepping up her attack on the BJP, Banerjee claimed that the party was spending lakhs of rupees to purchase votes. “Lakhs of rupees are being seized every day. They are trying to purchase votes by distributing cash. They think they can buy everyone with cash.”

Talking about the Calcutta High Court’s recent orders to cancel over 25,000 teachers’ jobs and scrap all Other Backward Class (OBC) certificates issued by the Bengal government since 2010, she said, “I will not allow BJP’s plot to be successful. I will not allow the snatching away jobs or OBC certificates. Similarly, I will not allow the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC), and Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.”

She also said that if anyone casts a vote for any anti-BJP party in West Bengal other than the TMC, it will mean indirectly helping the BJP. “This (voting for any party other than TMC) will mean division in anti-BJP votes. Every vote cast to any other party will make the BJP happy. Do not divide anti-BJP votes,” Banerjee urged voters.
