  • The executive council of Jadavpur University accepted the recommendations of the anti-ragging committee, which has asked for the expulsion of four senior students allegedly involved in the ragging of a first-year student, leading to his death last year, an official said on Saturday.

The four expelled students, who are currently in police custody, belong to the civil engineering, economics and sociology departments.

In addition to this, the anti-ragging committee of the university has also recommended that five other students, found to be involved in the case, be rusticated for four semesters. These five students are from the science and engineering departments.

According to the university vice-chancellor Bhaskar Gupta, the committee has also recommended that all nine students should be permanently expelled from the men’s hostel. “We have accepted all the recommendations made by the anti-ragging committee. We cannot act as per the law as it is not in our hands. However, from our end, we have taken all possible punishable measures that could have been taken against the accused,” said the JU V-C.
The vice-chancellor, on Friday, had convened an executive council meeting where the discussions were held and the recommendations were accepted.

An undergraduate Bengali honours student, hailing from the Nadia district, was found severely injured after falling from the second-floor balcony of the men’s hostel in August last year. He was allegedly ragged and sexually abused by a section of students from the hostel and he succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on August 10. Later, the authorities in the university earmarked separate blocks for undergraduates and post-graduate students, and installed CCTV cameras at strategic entry points of the university campus and the hostel.
