  • Kolkata: An empty local train derailed at Liluah station in Eastern Railway’s Howrah division early on Tuesday morning, disrupting train movement. No casualty was reported, but local train services were hampered for over five hours once again on a busy weekday. On Monday ER’s Sealdah South section was affected in the aftermath of cyclone Remal.

The incident occurred at 7.05am when the Howrah-bound train was being diverted from the down main line to the reversible tracks, officials said. The derailment blocked the Down main line and affected the Up main line, too, causing disruption of train movement in the Howrah-Bandel main line section.

Senior Eastern Railway officials and engineers rushed to the spot. The accident relief train from Howrah was called in. It had arrived by 7.10am, an official said. “The seventh coach from the engine derailed. An inquiry will start on Wednesday and if anyone is found responsible, action will be taken,” Sanjeev Kumar, divisional railway manager (DRM), Howrah told TOI. “Restoration was over by 11 am. The derailed coach was removed. By noon, normal services resumed,” Kumar said.

The first train movement along the Down main line started at 8.18am. Trains on the Up line were diverted via Up Howrah-Bardhaman chord line from Howrah and redirected through Belur for four hours.
