  • KOLKATA: Trinamool Congress had already won 23 of the 33 Bengal constituencies that had gone for polls, party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee said on Tuesday.

"Many have been texting me and asking about the estimated number of seats AITC will win in the upcoming polls. I had said that I would reveal it at the right time. Today, I want to say that out of 33 seats that went to polls, Trinamool Congress has crossed the 23-seat mark. This is my challenge and you can tally my claims on June 4," Banerjee said after a roadshow at South 24 Parganas' Sarisha in Diamond Harbour constituency. "Nine seats are still left. I promise you all, BJP will be decimated once people in Diamond Harbour cast their votes," he added.

Banerjee said he had information that the income tax department would raid five places on May 31 and June 1, when polls will be held in nine constituencies in Bengal, including Diamond Harbour.

"An income tax officer himself informed me because they know the tide is shifting. The officer had first texted me at 12.30am and then called me. He even said he would let me know the places they will raid before the operation. But I told them it's not needed," he said.

"This is the situation of BJP - which is of the agency, by the agency and for the agency. But we are of the people, by the people and for the people. You can do whatever you want, but even then I will win with over 4 lakh votes in this constituency," Banerjee said, standing atop a campaign vehicle following the roadshow from Kamarpole Paler More to Sarisha crossing.

The Trinamool general secretary further added that BJP already knew that it had lost the , which was why party candidates were accusing central forces of "doing nothing". "BJP has now started blaming central forces. Why? Because central forces are also aware that on June 4, a democratic INDIA bloc will form govt. It's just a matter of a few days," he said

Earlier, on the day's first public meeting in South 24 Parganas' Bishnupur, Banerjee said voters had already broken BJP's spine, head, limbs, ribs and waists in the first six phases. "Once they come to Diamond Harbour, the people here will put the last nail on the coffin. Once the ballot boxes open on June 4, BJP netas will see shorshe (mustard) phool instead of padma (lotus) phool (a reference to a Bengali idiom meaning heads will be reeling)," he said.
