  • With Cyclone Remal taking centrestage amid campaigning for the Lok Sabha elections, the TMC and the BJP on Monday hit out at each other over the ongoing relief work in the areas affected by the storm.

While Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her concern over the severe impact of the cyclone, the BJP took a dig at her for not stepping out to help the affected people.

Banerjee, in a post on X voiced for immediate compensation for the affected families, assuring that the administration would adhere to legal protocols while distributing aid for crop and property damages, as Model Code of Conduct (MCC) is in force.

The CM lauded the collective efforts of the state administration, including Chief Secretary BP Gopalika, civic bodies, and panchayats, in carrying out the relief work in the affected areas, despite concurrent electoral responsibilities. “Our administration was prepared to face the disaster despite being busy because of elections.

From the chief secretary to the entire secretariat of my state, from the district administration to the block administration, everyone has always stood by the people unitedly in dealing with disasters, and will continue to do so in the future,” she said.

The BJP, however, criticised the CM for not being present on the road and help the affected people. BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya stated that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams as well as the BJP workers are on the ground, while Banerjee has not stepped out. “West Bengal needs a Chief Minister, who does little more than just post on X. You haven’t stepped out, at all… Mayor of Kolkata is busy defending your comment… None of the officials mentioned in your post are seen out there monitoring relief operations,” he posted on X.
