  • Kolkata: Posters protesting the implementation of punishments in the ragging case appeared in Jadavpur University less than a week after the Executive Council agreed to the expulsion of four students for their direct involvement in the ragging of the fresher, and suspension of 30 students for either ragging other juniors or suppressing facts related to the incident.

The posters have been put up by a section of boarders of the A2 block of the Main Hostel, who are among the accused and have been suspended for four semesters or one semester, and permanently ousted from the hostel.

A mechanical engineering student suspended for four semesters and barred from the hostel, said they had put up posters across the campus and had urged the authority to issue a show-cause notice and give them a chance to defend themselves.

Teachers and officials said that whenever the authority had tried to implement any strict action against ragging, they faced protests from a section of students. “This time, too, they are doing this to delay the implementation,” said a source. “The implementation of punishments will be done following rules and procedures,” said interim VC Bhaskar Gupta.
