• Mamata hits back: PM spreading lies about giving Central funds to Bengal

  • West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP of “spreading lies” about funds being provided to the state and challenged the PM to prove his claim.  Addressing rallies at Metiabruz in Diamond Harbour constituency and Kalighat, she  said the “change of regime at the Centre is imminent and Modi would cease to be the Prime Minister of the country after June 4”.

She said she is “ready to sacrifice her life” but wouldn’t allow divisive politics of the saffron camp such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. “Prime Minister while addressing rallies in Bengal said the Centre had sent funds for the state which were siphoned off and looted by the TMC. The PM is lying. I challenge him to prove that the Centre had released funds for the state,” she said.

Claiming that the BJP will pay for their arrogance in the polls, Banerjee said the PM’s recent remarks that the BJP’s best results will come from Bengal is “actually an admission that the party will face a rout in other parts of the country.”  “So does that mean that the BJP will lose elections in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Bihar? It seems the saffron party has conceded defeat even before the polls are over,” she said.

Banerjee said, “As part of Modi Babu’s guarantee, they were publishing misleading advertisements in newspapers against us. We lodged multiple complaints but there was no action. Yesterday, the high court also said it is illegal. They don’t release MGNREGA funds but spend crores on conspiracies, to buy votes and spread propaganda.”

Banerjee also hit out at the BJP for having an “agreement” with the Congress and the CPI(M) in Dum Dum constituency, where the TMC has fielded senior party leader Saugata Roy. He is facing Congress-backed Left Front candidate Sujan Chakraborty and BJP’s Shilabhadra Dutta. “There is an agreement between the CPI(M) and the BJP to defeat Trinamool. In the polls in Dumdum, BJP will transfer its votes to the Left Front and in Baranagar Assembly bypoll, the Left Front will transfer its votes to the BJP.”

Reacting to the allegations, Chakraborty said, “Why did the Chief Minister not say this when she came to Dumdum. Why did she say this at Baruipur? Does she have any other equation? She has realised that the TMC will be defeated both in Dumdum and Jadavpur.”

Reacting to Banerjee’s remarks, BJP state spokesperson Samik Bhattacharya said, “The PM has only tried to highlight the corruption during the TMC regime. It is a well-known fact that the TMC is neck-deep in corruption.”

The CM alleged that the BJP has been spreading canards through misleading advertisements.

On the CM’s allegations of the BJP working with Congress and the CPI(M), Bhattacharya said, “Mamata has realised that the TMC will lose in Dumdum. Last time, we lost in Dumdum by only 53,000 votes… This time we will win in Dumdum.”
