  • Siliguri: Residents of Siliguri on Friday continued to grapple with an acute drinking water crisis caused by a polluted Mahananda, two days after mayor Gautam Deb announced that the water supplied from the treatment plant in Fulbari was unfit for consumption, reports Roshan Gupta.

Siliguri’s drinking water is drawn from the Teesta-Mahananda canal and brought to the treatment plant. The Teesta barrage at Gajoldoba, which was damaged in last Oct’s floods, is currently under repairs. The waters of the Mahananda were recently found to have an unacceptable level of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD).
