• ‘Inspection of HS schools must before excess intake’

  • Kolkata: To curb admission-related corruption, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education has announced that excess admission in HS schools — beyond the permissible limit of 400 students — will be subject to physical verification by the council. The inspection report should be submitted along with the online application before June 30.

The move comes in response to pressure from political leaders, which often results in excess admissions without prior approval. The issue usually comes to light during exams . Last year, 6.8 lakh candidates appeared for Madhyamik, out of which 5.6 lakh passed. This year, the number increased to 9.1 lakh, with 7.6 lakh students passing the exam.

Council president Chiranjib Bhattacharya said: “It was noticed that some schools had admitted 300 or more students over the maximum limit of 275 and did registration keeping the council in dark. This time, we already increased the limit.” However, some teachers’ organizations have opposed this decision.

Schools had a limit of admitting up to 300 students. In addition, there is leeway to admit another 100 through recommendations.
