  • At a time when many parts of India are reeling under an intense heatwave, people in Bengal woke up to the sound of rain on Friday. Further, in what will surely gladden the hearts of pluviophiles in the eastern state, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that wet weather conditions will prevail in Bengal for at least the next two days.

The IMD said the recent rain could be a result of the early entry of the monsoon in Kerala, among others. The monsoon entered Kerala in South India on Thursday, a day earlier than predicted by the IMD.

Somnath Dutta, Eastern Regional Director, IMD, said there is a possibility of heavy rain in the five upper districts of North Bengal – Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri – on Friday. The Met Office has issued a Yellow alert for Alipurduar, Jalpaiguri, and Cooch Behar.

There are also chances of rain in North and South Dinajpur, and Malda. Scattered rain has been forecast in South Bengal. Whereas, state capital Kolkata might experience gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph along with thundershowers on Friday. The city recently witnessed torrential downpour in the wake of Cyclone Remal, leading to waterlogged streets and uprooted trees.

Heavy rain has been forecast for the five upper districts of North Bengal on Saturday as well. Rain has been predicted in other parts of Bengal too. Notably, nine Lok Sabha constituencies in South Bengal will go to the polls on June 1.

The weather office said that rain will likely continue in North Bengal till June 5 along with scattered rain in parts of South Bengal.

Dutta said the monsoon is expected to enter neighbouring Sikkim in the next two to three days. However, there was no indication of the early arrival of monsoon in Bengal.
