  • NEW DELHI: Bhaichung Bhutia, the erstwhile skipper of India's national football squad, appears to be facing an uphill battle in his quest for electoral success.

In the Barfung constituency he finds himself lagging behind Rikshal Dorjee Bhutia, a candidate from the incumbent Sikkim Krantikari Morcha by a margin exceeding 4300 votes after the conclusion of the third and ultimate round of counting.

In 2018, Bhutia established his own party the Hamro Sikkim Party but decided to merge it with the SDF last year.

The overall scenario in the state also paints a grim picture for Bhutia and his political party the Sikkim Democratic Front.
