• BJP candidate Tapas Roy faces protests at booths, slams TMC

  • Former MLA and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Kolkata Uttar Tapas Roy on Saturday accused Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers of threatening voters in the constituency and trying to impact the polling process during the last phase of the Lok Sabha elections.

    Roy, who quit the TMC to join BJP weeks before the Lok Sabha polls, also faced protests during his visits to different booths. The TMC has fielded senior leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay from Kolkata Uttar.

    “They (TMC) have tried their best to disturb the polling process. Every time, I received a complaint, I rushed. Free and fair polls cannot be conducted this way,” Roy said while talking to reporters.

    On Saturday, he visited polling stations in Cossipore, Beliaghata, Chowringhee, Kashipur, Jorasanko, Entally l, Maniktala and Shyampukur, among other areas. At some of the booths, he was met with ‘go back’ slogans and protests. Roy also alleged that people are being prevented from voting at booth number 57 in Cossipore in Kolkata Uttar constituency. At a booth set up at Bangabasi College in Cossipore, TMC supporters demonstrated while gathering around Roy’s car.

    When asked if he felt the turnout was relatively low this year, he said, “Yes, the turnout seems to be low, I appeal to people to come out and vote for whoever they want to but at least cast their vote.” The Chief Electoral Officer of Bengal received 107 complaints of charges like booth capturing and voter intimidation from Kolkata Uttar constituency till 4 pm.
