• HS students bag 4 of top 10 ranks on WBJEE merit list, 7 from districts

  • KOLKATA: Four students from the state Higher Secondary board, four from CBSE and two ISC examinees bagged the top 10 ranks of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE), the results for which were declared on Thursday.

    Led by Kingshuk Patra of Bankura Zilla School, who secured the first position, and Shubhradeep Paul of Kalyani University Experimental High School, who stood second, HS schools' representation on the merit list was better than previous years.Students from districts also pipped those from Kolkata, occupying seven of the top 10 ranks. The three from Kolkata in the top-10 list were Mayukh Chowdhury of South Point School (rank 5), Atharva Singhania of DPS Ruby Park (rank 6), and Shounak Kar of Scottish Church Collegiate School (rank 9).

    The top four students expressed their wish to pursue education at the IITs.

    'Question pattern, course change helped HS students perform better in JEE'

    WBJEE board chairman Malayendu Saha attributed the improvement in performance of HS students to changes in question patterns and course curriculum brought about by the HS council as well as enhanced teaching and learning processes.

    Out of 1,42,694 registered students, 1,13,492 appeared for the exam and 1,12,963 (99.53%) were declared successful. Among the successful candidates, 61,575 were from the HS board, 31,883 from CBSE, 7,595 from CISCE and 11,910 from other boards.

    WBJEEB chairman Malayendu Saha said, "All students who appeared will get a rank card but only successful candidates can appear for the counselling." The counseling process for admission to engineering colleges in Bengal will consist of three rounds - seat allotment, upgradation, and mop-up round. The dates for counselling will be announced later.

    Saha highlighted the diversity of the applicants, with students from 72 boards across the country appearing for the exam, including those from Andaman & Nicobar, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Meghalaya, and Mizoram. Of the over 1.1 lakh successful candidates, 26,113 are from other states.

    "It is very satisfactory for us that students from across the country registered for the state joint entrance," Saha said.

    Avik Das from Alipurduar, who had topped West Bengal Higher Secondary examination, secured the seventh rank at WBJEE. Avik wishes to pursue astrophysics in IISc Bangalore, as it has been his passion since childhood.
