  • Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal assembly and BJP MLA Suvendu Adhikari Thursday wrote to Governor C V Ananda Bose, alleging that 10,000 BJP workers and their families are taking refuge in BJP party offices and safehouses after post-poll violence allegedly unleashed by the Trinamool Congress on June 4.

He requested Bose to visit different places in Bengal, including 10 districts where BJP workers have allegedly been targeted in 20 incidents.

Adhikari alleged that the TMC-led state government is not utilising central forces stationed in Bengal.

“As has become synonymous now with the state of West Bengal, the goons of the ruling dispensation have gone berserk upon the workers of BJP after the declaration of results of the Parliamentary General Elections. This seems to be a repeat of the incidents which had transpired after the 2021 assembly election results in Bengal, which had resulted in the death of several BJP karyakartas (workers)…,” the letter sent on June 6 states.

“Though Central Armed Paramilitary Forces have been stationed post polls as well, such forces are not being utilised to control the deteriorating situation whereby workers of the BJP are being targeted by the goons affiliated to the ruling dispensation in the State,” the letter read.

It also highlighted alleged incidents of attacks against BJP workers and their families in different parts of Bengal.

“It has just been 24-odd hours since the completion of the counting process and more than 20 incidents all across the State, more specifically from Asansol, Durgapur, Mednipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Cooch Behar, Hooghly, Barrackpore, Barasat, North 24 Parganas, have already been reported,” the letter read.

“Around 10,000 people are homeless already owing to such state-sponsored reign of terror and living out of fear in the various safe houses arranged by the BJP. Details of such safe houses can be readily provided, in case Your Excellency so desires,” it read.

He also requested Bose to “visit the areas from where post-poll violences are being reported and ensure that innocent lives are not lost”.
