  • Kolkata: Trinamool Congress MLA and actress Sayantika Banerjee, who won the Baranagar assembly bypoll with 69,251 votes recently, said a plantation drive would kick off in the 38 wards of Baranagar Municipality on the day she would take oath.

According to Banerjee, 100 saplings will be planted in each ward of the municipality.

Sources said that Baranagar, a densely populated pocket on the northern fringe of the city, is set to get 3,800 new plants due to the drive initiated by the MLA.

Banerjee said, “I have informed all the councillors to get ready for the plantation drive which will start on the day of my oath-taking. The drive will continue to send forth a green message among the residents of Baranagar. With so many buildings and apartments coming up, the green cover of the area has been affected. This has prompted me to initiate the plantation drive.”

Banerjee added, “Plans are also afoot to restore the fields in this area with more plants. I want the locals to come forward and join the plantation drive.”
