  • With the infrastructure upgrade at the Sealdah railway station in Kolkata affecting train schedules for the third consecutive day on Sunday, a group of agitated passengers broke the window of a ticket counter and demonstrated outside the station master’s room in protest.

The construction started Friday and led to several suburban trains being cancelled or short-terminated over the past three days. Out of the 21 platforms at Sealdah, operations at five were suspended for the infrastructure upgrade work, officials said.

Passengers said they faced inconvenience after several long-distance trains were cancelled, with the sultry weather adding to their discomfort. Many passengers had to spend the night at the railway station after their trains were either cancelled or short-terminated.

Eastern Railway officials said that the ongoing infrastructure upgrade at Sealdah station has been completed and the train services are likely to normalise soon. “To accommodate the operation of 12-coach EMU trains on the Sealdah Main section, we implemented several infrastructural modifications, including modernising the interlocking system.

Consequently, platforms number 1 to 5 at Sealdah station were closed from last Friday till Sunday 2 pm, as per the planned schedule,” Eastern Railway spokesperson Kausik Mitra told reporters.

“However, the work was completed two hours ahead of schedule, allowing EMU train operations to commence on all platforms from Sunday noon. Although train services have resumed, some trains may experience slight delays,” he added.

According to officials, around 80 local trains to and from the terminal station were cancelled on Friday and Saturday for the upgrade work.
