  • Kolkata: Followers of Dilip Ghosh and Suvendu Adhikari engaged in a social media war of words on Monday as questions arose over the next president of BJP’s state unit, with Sukanta Majumdar’s appointment as a junior minister.

BJP veteran Dilip Ghosh said on Monday: “There was a time when we did not have many faces, but we have quite a few legislators now and there is no dearth of netas. It’s not necessary that I’ll have to take the responsibility once again. Let the party decide that.”

Ghosh’s followers — from the Facebook handle ‘Dilipdar Sainik’ — referred to Narada tapes and alleged Adhikari’s involvement in scams. They added that seniors like Ghosh or Majumdar were never involved in a crime and opposition parties could never target them. They also claimed that Ghosh and Majumdar didn’t have any say in picking candidates for 36 LS seats in Bengal.

Adhikari’s followers — going by the Facebook handle ‘Suvendudar Sainik’ — posted photos of Ghosh with Trinamool seniors like Kunal Ghosh. They also said BJP lost six of the seven assembly constituencies under Midnapore LS in 2021 assembly polls, during Ghosh’s tenure as MP.

Adhikari, however, said: “Not everything happened according to my wish. Despite this, I tried to do my best.” He was speaking to reporters in South 24 Parganas’ Amtala. “Those who take political decisions on behalf of BJP will decide the next president of the state,” he added.

Reacting to this, Bishnupur MP Saumitra Khan said: “It is not right to appoint someone as state president or a minister just because the person won a poll. There are many such netas in the party... we couldn’t have won four seats in south Bengal had Suvenduda not helped us.”
