  • The India Meteorological Department has forecast thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds over south Bengal districts from Wednesday onwards, which are also likely to bring the mercury down in the state.

An official at the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata said on Monday that the districts would continue to reel under hot and sultry weather till Wednesday. The districts of South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Hooghly, East Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, East Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Nadia and Kolkata are likely to witness thunderstorms and rains from Wednesday, according to the official.

“There is a possibility of rain in the districts of West Midnapore and West Burdwan as well. However, the heatwave will continue there. From Thursday onwards, rain will intensify in all districts of south Bengal,” said the official.

Heavy rain will continue to occur in north Bengal districts, where the monsoon has already set in. “In Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar districts, heavy to very heavy rain will occur. In the rest of the north Bengal districts, heavy rain will continue,” he added.

The temperature touched 40 degrees Celsius in nine places in south Bengal on Sunday, with Kalaikunda in West Midnapore district recording 43 degrees Celsius as the day’s highest temperature.
