  • The Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal on Monday began reinstating the officers, who were transferred by the Election Commission of India during the election process. During the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, the poll body had transferred several officials including the Director General of Police (DGP) of the West Bengal police, other police officers and district magistrates’, relieving them from election duty.

However, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, last week, convened a meeting with senior bureaucrats over the transfers, a source said. According to top officials of the state administration, major reshuffle will be initiated on Tuesday after the meeting of Chief Minister. “On Tuesday, Chief Minister will have a meeting with all DMs, SPs and other officials. After that, we are expecting that, she may reinstate Rajeev Kumar as DGP,” a senior official said.

Among the top-notch officers, who have been reinstated to their former positions are DGP Virendra, ADG (Law and Order) Jawed Shamim and DG Security Vivek Sahay, an order issued on Monday said.

The ECI had on March 18 removed Rajeev Kumar, as the state DGP two days after the schedule for the Lok Sabha elections was announced. Kumar was replaced with Sanjay Mukherjee. Later, the commission also removed Vivek Sahay as interim DGP.

The state government on Monday appointed Purnendu Kumar Maji as the new district magistrate of Purba Medinipur, replacing Joyoshi Das Gupta. Maji was earlier posted to State Fisheries Development Corporation.

Das Gupta was transferred back to the Personnel and Administrative Reforms department. On Saturday, Das Gupta, a 2010-batch IAS officer, was named as the officer on special duty in the personnel and administrative reforms department.

Das Gupta was appointed as the DM of Purba Medinipur district by the EC in March, succeeding Tanvir Afzal. After the Lok Sabha election dates were announced the MCC came in force, the EC in April had removed West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar, four DM’s — Purba Bardhaman DM Bidhan Chandra Roy, Purba Medinipur DM Tanvir Afzal, Birbhum DM Purnendu Kumar, and Jhargram DM Sunil Agarwal.
