It is the highest number of joint replacement surgeries to have been conducted at a govt hospital in Bengal. The patients will undergo rehabilitation training before they being released. The procedures were conducted at IPGMER’s 160-bedded orthopaedic unit at Sambhunath Pandit Hospital

“The procedures included four total hip replacement and two each of total knee and partial hip replacement surgeries. The three orthopaedic teams were led by doctors AS Dutta, A Karmakar and S Basask,” said professor Mukul Bhattacharya, the orthopaedic head. Each procedure took between one and one-and-a-half hours and titanium implants were used on all.

“The government has increased allocation for such procedures for Swasthya Sathi patients and hence we are getting the implant cost faster,” said Manimoy Banerjee, IPGMER director.
