  • Kolkata: KMDA was from Wednesday allowed to construct multi-storey buildings on thika plots in the city and surroundings after The West Bengal Thika Tenancy (Acquisition and Regulation) (Amended) Act, 2024, came into force after assembly passed it earlier this year.

Earlier, only KMC and Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) could carry out constructions on thika land under their jurisdictions, the rule being extended to KMDA will bring nearly the entire state under the ambit.Developers said the amended rule would pave the way for redevelopment of a large slum near Anwar Shah Road under KMDA.

A KMDA official said there were some thika plots in and around Chetla. “Now that KMDA will also be able to set up housing on thika land for thika lessess, it will help accommodate more people in vertical expansions,” he said.

The state cabinet had earlier cleared the proposal of constructing multi-storey buildings on thika land in Kolkata, removing an earlier curb on buildings beyond 9.5 m in height there. Prior to it, tenants on thika land could not build or develop houses.
