5 injured, bldg damaged in Maheshtala cylinder blast

Kolkata: Residents of Gopal Nagar Sarkar Para in Maheshtala woke up to a loud explosion on Saturday when a blast injured five people, two of them critically.
Locals said the intensity of the blast, which happened around 7 am, was so high that windows of nearby houses also shattered. Neighbours rushed out and witnessed a second explosion. The injured were taken to a local nursing home and Vidyasagar Hospital in Behala.Among them, two are in critical condition.
Khakon Sen, ex-councillor, said the incident happened at Dinobandhu apartment, a four-storey building. Ajoy Dhal and his family lived on the top floor. The blast happened in the kitchen. Sen said the cylinder’s pipe was leaking, leading to the first explosion, followed by the blast of another cylinder. The AC in the room also exploded, injuring Dhal’s son Sanjoy and one Krishno Naskar.
Three fire engines and CESC personnel also reached the spot.
