Kolkata: Localities in Rajarhat Gopalpur, which fall under Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) wards 1 to 21— covering Baguiati, Kestopur, Kaikhali and its surroundings —will soon get filtered water supply.
With elections over, the BMC has planned to float tenders to take up the ambitious project of laying pipelines for supplying filtered water to its wards 1 to 21.Work to set up house-to-house connection in BMC ward 22 to 26 and in wards 38 and parts of 39 will also start.
Officials said earlier this year the Centre’s AMRUT 2.0 mission approved a Rs 333-crore detail project report for BMC to set up a filtered water distribution network in wards 1 to 21, covering Rajarhat Gopalpur area, which mostly uses underground reserves for water supply.
Three to four separate tenders were being planned to be floated as the entire project was planned to be executed in phases, officials added. “The first step is to lay pipelines to set up the main distribution network. Once this is completed, next will be to set up house-to-house connections,” said a BMC official.
The civic body would also start the work to lay house-to-house pipelines in areas under wards 22 to 26, covering Kestopur, Baguiati and other adjoining areas. As per records, there are around 40,000 households in these five wards, which will be connected to the main distribution network to have filtered water supply.
As per plans, the authorities will also take up the work to lay pipelines and set up water reservoirs in wards 28, 35 and 36, covering Mahsibathan, Nayapatti, Polenite, Sukantanagar and vast parts of bheri areas spreading over 22.6 sq km. Once the scheme is implemented, around 75,000 people residing in these areas will be benefited.
Presently the BMC receives 11 MGD of water per day, out of which seven MGD comes from Tallah and the rest from the New Town water treatment plant. Most of the filtered water is supplied to Salt Lake areas falling under wards 29 to 34 and wards 37 to 41. Once the distribution network is set up, entire Rajarhat Gopalpur area falling under BMC wards 1 to 26 will start receiving filtered water from the New Town plant. Once the overall distribution network is set up, entire Rajarhat Gopalpur area, falling under BMC wards 1 to 26, will start receiving filtered water from the New Town plant.
