  • NEW DELHI: It was chaos all over at the accident site near Rangapani station in West Bengal where a goods train collided with Sealdah-Kanchanjungha Express train on Monday morning leaving at least eight people dead and several injured.

    A wagon of the Kanchanjungha Express was left hanging in the air after the deadly collision.

    As per the authorities, two rear compartments of the Kanchanjunga Express derailed due to the impact of the collision by the engine of the goods train from behind.

    The impact caused significant damage and derailment of the compartments. As per the NFR officials, four coaches of the Kanchanjunga Express and five coaches of the goods train have been damaged in the collision.

    Railway officials said that 13174 Kanchanjunga Express train was bound for Sealdah from Agartala when the accident occurred at around 9am.

    Rescue operations are underway at the spot, about 5km from New Jalpaiguri station, and the injured persons were being shifted to nearby hospitals.

    Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that teams of railways, NDRF and SDRF were working in close coordination with local authorities to carry out relief and rescue operation at the spot.

    Vaishnaw immediately left for West Bengal to take stock of relief operations.
