• Relief for Bengal with Southwest Monsoon, orange and yellow alerts in several areas

  • The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a notice saying that many areas of West Bengal will get relief from the humid heat due to the Southwest Monsoon on Friday. It has reportedly spread across the entire state, particularly the South and Western districts of Bengal.

    A significant yellow alert was issued for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, and Coochbehar in North Bengal this Saturday. North and South 24 Parganas, Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura, Bardhaman, and Birbum also received yellow alerts. In one or two areas of each of these places, heavy to very heavy rainfall (7-20cm) is expected on Saturday.

    The IMD has also issued a weather warning for fishermen on the West Bengal coast from Saturday to Monday, due to a strong monsoon current and surface wind running at 40-50 kmph. Fishermen have been advised to refrain from venturing into the sea due to high waves in the range of 1.9-2.0 till 11.30 pm on Saturday.

    As for this Sunday, an orange alert was issued for Jaipur, Alipurdar and Coochbehar of North Bengal.

    On Saturday, West Bengal is predicted to see a general drop in temperature of 2-3 degrees Celsius. According to the IMD, Kolkata is expected to see thunderstorms, a maximum temperature of about 30 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 26 degrees Celsius. The sky will likely be cloudy with a 98% humidity rate, the department added.

    On Thursday, the highest temperature was recorded in Panagarh from South Bengal at 36.9 degrees Celsius and Malda from North Bengal at 35.9.
