  • The BJP on Monday alleged that a woman was beaten up by some miscreants in Haroa under the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency in West Bengal for voting in favour of the party in the Lok Sabha elections.

BJP Basirhat district president Tapas Ghosh said the woman was subjected to assault by a few men last month.

“The woman who happens to be a BJP supporter was taken away from her house in the night by a few men. They tied her to a tree and beat her up for voting for the BJP in the Lok Sabha polls. This is the state of affairs of women in Bengal. She has lodged a complaint with the police but no action has been taken yet,” Ghosh told the Indian Express.

In a video shared by a BJP supporter named Debajit Sarkar on an X handle, the woman said she was beaten up in front of her three sons. “Even my sons were beaten up too. I was assaulted for voting for the BJP,” said the woman.

The officer-in-charge of the local police station, however, claimed no such incident took place and no complaint has been lodged with the police by the woman.

“One incident had taken place on June 18 when the woman complained that there was a dispute with her neighbour. The police went and resolved the matter. We had even videographed her statement and no complaint was lodged. I don’t know why she is making this claim now. The allegation is completely baseless and she has not lodged any complaint regarding her claim,” said Monirul Islam Sarkar, officer-in-charge of Shasan Police Station.

The alleged incident comes close on the heels of the whipping and assaulting of a woman and a man publicly over an alleged extramarital affair at a salishi sabha (kangaroo court). The incident took place in the Lakhipur gram panchayat area of Chopra block in Uttar Dinajpur district on June 28. Outrage mounted after a video clip of the assault surfaced online.
