  • Mukul Roy, a former close associate of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was hospitalised for a head injury after he fell down at his residence at Kanchrapara on Wednesday.

The 70-year-old politician was admitted to a private hospital in Kalyani and later shifted to another private hospital in Kolkata. Hospital sources said he was found to have a blood clot, which was operated upon. While Roy is on ventilator support, the sources said his condition is stable and he is under observation, they added.

His son Subhrangshu Roy said that on Wednesday night his father “fell down while going to the bathroom… he vomited and fell unconscious.”

Roy has not been active in politics for two years, and has been suffering from diabetes and dementia. In April, he was hospitalised due to various ailments.

In 2017, Roy had resigned from the TMC and joined the BJP. He was then elected as a BJP MLA from Krishnanagar Uttar in 2021. After that, he resigned from the BJP and unofficially returned to TMC. On paper, he is still an MLA of the BJP.
