  • Convicted Maoist leader Arnab Dam, whose enrollment for PhD at Burdwan University was paused last week, will now appear for counselling on Monday, after the state correctional home Saturday approved his interim parole, allowing Dam to be transferred to a jail located nearer to the university.

Dam, 46, was shifted to Burdwan Correctional Home from Hooghly on Sunday.

West Bengal Correctional Administration minister Akhil Giri said security will be provided for his visit to the university campus and once the counselling is over, he will be able to pursue his course.

On July 8, the Burdwan University had notified that it was pausing the counselling process for all prospective students’ admission to the six-month course. Dam, who had topped the interviews, last week had started a token fast , since he could not enroll in the course after the university halted admissions. He broke his fast after he was shifted to a different jail.

Dam is serving life sentence for his role in the 2010 attack on an Eastern Frontier Rifles camp at Sildah in Jhargram district.
