  • Kolkata: Two elderly persons, who were among the 18 whose eyes got infected after cataract surgery in a state-run hospital, have lost vision in one eye. While one is a 75-year-old man, the other is a 76-year-old woman. Doctors at Regional Institute of Ophthalmology (RIO) were treating the infection. Sixteen others are still undergoing treatment for the infection and doctors said their vision was slowly improving.

“We could not save the vision of these two individuals. Both had several comorbidities, including diabetes and lung issues along with malnutrition. Oxygen supply to their eyes was also compromised due to retinopathy and glaucoma. Unlike the rest of the 16, their system could not fight the infection despite all treatment to control the it,” said a state health official.

The two, along with 16 others, had undergone cataract surgery at Metiabruz Superspecialty Hospital. They were admitted in RIO as they developed infection after the procedure.
