  • Kolkata: A businessman from Patuli who was abducted over a week ago and rescued in Noida by detective department officers and cops from Patuli police station on Tuesday has turned out to be a cyber fraud himself.

Three days into the investigation and after six arrests from UP, cops in Kolkata have learnt that the Patuli businessman, Satyendra Kumar, was a member of a cyber-fraud ring and was in charge of providing mule accounts to his gang.Cops suspect that his own associates — unhappy with the division of profits — might have abducted him.

According to police sources, Satyendrawas paid a hefty sum for the mule accounts. “However, after taking the money, he failed to provide the required account numbers, prompting the members of the fraud gang to kidnap him. Satyendra has also been arrested before.

Sources revealed that Satyendra targeted impoverished individuals and trapped them into renting their bank accounts for a small amount. He then supplied these accounts to fraudsters.

Satyendra had claimed that the kidnappers enticed him to visit Noida to set up a café there. His family said the accused demanded Rs 10 lakh.

“After rescuing the businessman and interrogating the arrested, we seized documents from the spot in Noida. These documents revealed the accused’s links with Satyendra,” said additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma.

“We will be taking action against him based on the merit of charges against him,” an officer said.
