  • Kolkata: Principals, directors and chairpersons of institutes are generally seen at their corner offices making hard decisions on administrative matters. But on Saturday, they took on a different role, mesmerizing a 300-odd audience with their medley performance in three languages for a noble cause.

The band — Musical Mentors — comprising 18 educators, was formed almost a year ago out of a musical therapy session to get relief from stress.Renowned pianist Rajlakshmi Syam, who ideated music therapy with different elements like art forms and colour therapy, feels that it promotes sisterhood and rejuvenates the minds.

B D Memorial Junior School director Suman Sood said, “I attended a music therapy session and was highly impressed. Then I thought that it would be nice if educators could unwind themselves after long hours of work. Then I reached out to everyone and we met at well-known pianist Syam’s house for the music therapy session.”

South City International School principal Satabdi Bhattacharjee said, “As we were singing pretty well, I came up with the idea of forming a band and performing for noble causes and raising funds so that we can help different organizations. This time, we will be performing for the cancer brave hearts and will donate Rs 51,000 to the Saroj Gupta Cancer Centre and Research Institute.”

La Martiniere for Girls principal Rupkatha Sarkar feels the thread that strung them together is the love for music. Silver Point principal Sucharita Roychowdhury said: “The sessions over music have been healing as we, principals, have been able to reach out to each other.”

Founder director of Wings Preschool, Daycare & Activity Centre Neeta Kanoria, one of the organizers of the event, said the sessions helped them to stay happy and motivated, fostering collaboration among schools, instead of competition.
