Muhammed Musharaf put East Bengal in front on the cusp of half-time. Adil Amal then clinched the issue for Bino George’s home team with the second goal in the 69th minute.

The fifth win in six matches took East Bengal to 16 points.Bhawanipore SC — who also have 16 points and who like East Bengal are unbeaten — slipped to the second place because of an inferior goal difference.

With a number of key players like PV Vishnu and Sayan Banerjee nursing injuries, East Bengal coach George had to rejig his starting XI.

The hosts went ahead in the second minute of the first first-half injury time thanks to an error of judgement from Railway FC goalkeeper Subhankar Dutta who failed to judge the trajectory of a looping ball from Musharaf which sailed over his head and nestled into the far corner of the net.

Playing a quick 1-2 with Aman CK following a short corner, Musharaf whipped in a long cross. Bijay Murmu headed it back into the box and Adil pushed it in from close.

In Wednesday’s other Group B matches, Suruchi Sangha edged Aryan Club 1-0 while Southern Samity defeated Kalighat MS 1-0.
