  • Kolkata: Mahitosh Roy’s stoppage-time penalty spared Mohammedan Sporting’s blushes as the defending champions scraped past bottom-placed Patha Chakra 2-1 in Naihati on Thursday to keep their Super Six hopes alive in the CFL Premier Division.

Israel Dewan continued his rich goalscoring form when he gave Mohammedan Sporting the lead in the 21st minute. But Patha Chakra — who have now lost five of their 6 matches and managed just 1 point — added twist to the drama when second-half substitute Debasish Haldar converted a penalty to make it 1-1 three minutes after the restart.

Although Mohammedan Sporting dominated the proceedings thereafter, they lacked a cutting edge in the attacking third. In a further setback, they were reduced to 10 men in the 86th minute when their defender T James Singh received a straight red card from referee Surojit Das for stopping the Patha Chakra goalscorer’s run following a quick counter-attack. But it was Mohammedan Sporting who made the most of 14 minutes of stoppage time as shown by the fourth referee.

In the third minute, Lalthankima launched an attack down the left and on entering the box, he was tripped from behind by a Patha Chakra rival, forcing the referee to point to the spot.
