  • Kolkata: A detailed report on the state of hawking in some of the prime hawking zones is being prepared and will be submitted to the CMO next month.

Sources in Kolkata Municipal Corporation on Thursday said the report was being prepared based on the observations of the civic team of officials who have been surveying hawkers. While the first phase of the survey was carried out in Gariahat, Hatibagan and New Market, the second phase in areas like Chandni Chowk, Sealdah, Bowbazar and SN Banerjee Road has just started.

“We have finished the first phase of the survey and started the second phase on Thursday. We hope to wind up the survey within 10 days. Thereafter, we will prepare a report and send it to the CMO,” said a civic official who has been associated with the hawker survey.

A KMC official entrusted to monitor the hawker survey said surveyors had taken note of the space being occupied by hawkers on carriageways and pavements. “Surveyors were told to zero in on violation of hawking rules. They were also asked to identify the genuine hawkers and register their names with the help of an app. The hawkers were asked to produce their Aadhaar cards in order to get registered as bona fide hawkers. All these factors will figure in the report that will be submitted to Nabanna,” said the civic official.

The Kolkata Police, on its part, has sent certain observations to KMC. In the report by police, formation of teams has been suggested to stop new spots from being encroached by hawkers. City cops have proposed to work in close coordination with KMC and other agencies like KMDA and KoPT. Cops’ anti-encroachment cell will help them maintain status quo at the verified spots and also maintain records of hawkers once the surveys are over.

In addition, another 950 parking spots have been proposed after survey and identification on ground.
