• JU student hospitalised after ‘panic attack’; university says ‘not ragging’

  • A Jadavpur University (JU) student suffered a panic attack after he was allegedly questioned by a group of students over a missing laptop, officials at the varsity said.

The first-year post-graduate computer science  student was admitted to a hospital on Wednesday night and his condition is said to be stable now.

Ruling out ragging, the university administration said the student was not beaten up.

“It was a case of misunderstanding between some students regarding a stolen laptop. The student got scared and suffered a panic attack. He is completely fine now and will be discharged from the hospital soon. We also told him that if he faces any problem regarding his study, then he should approach us. The student was not beaten up. It is not a case of ragging,” Snehamanju Basu, the registrar of the university, told mediapersons.

According to university officials, the student was accused of stealing a laptop from the main hostel. “Several students accosted the PG student and grilled him about the alleged theft. Under pressure, the student suffered a panic attack. The fellow students immediately called the Medical Superintendent of the hostel, Mitali Deb, who took him to a local hospital for treatment.

“The student is doing fine now. His parents have been informed. The stolen laptop has been recovered from the hostel,” said Deb.

His family, which arrived from Purulia on Thursday morning, alleged he was physically assaulted on suspicion of stealing a laptop at the hostel and had to be hospitalised.

“We are yet to get details about the incident. We heard the boy concerned has been admitted to hospital. But we don’t know the circumstances,” Tamalina, a member of the JU SFI unit said.

She said the SFI has zero tolerance for the ragging issue. If the allegations of ragging are proved the union will do whatever is required to stop the practice, she said.

Last August, a first-year student of JU, aged 17, died after falling off a balcony of the main hostel, allegedly after being ragged and sexually abused. A total of 13 persons — including current and former students — were arrested in connection with the case.

The incident triggered an outrage in the state and country as the university campus and adjacent streets were rocked by a series of protests by political parties and organisations for the next week. The university formed an inquiry committee to probe into the incident.
