  • Kolkata: The city police have warned motorists of legal actions if they are found using derogatory posters on their vehicles. In a case reported from north Kolkata on Friday, cops counselled the owner of a car who flaunted a malicious poster against women and instructed him to pull it down.

“The objectionable car sticker drew the attention of one of our colleagues. He felt there was misogyny hidden behind the apparent fun made against women. The poster stated that snakes can be trusted but not women. Such a provocative statement could count as defamation in the eyes of the law, drawing penalties under Section 356(i) of BNS,” said an officer. Cops said they could have taken the legal route but they decided to approach the vehicle owner first. “We approached the vehicle owner and appealed to his better judgment. By displaying such a negative statement, he was not demeaning women in general but also the members of his own family,” added the officer.

“We have decided to take a no-tolerance policy towards derogatory posters, especially the ones against women,” said additional CP (I) Murlidhar Sharma. —Dwaipayan Ghosh
