• Be sympathetic to juniors, think about your family: Bratya to students

  • Kolkata: Education minister Bratya Basu on Saturday hinted that the absence of a permanent vice-chancellor may be resulting in the delay in punishing the accused in the Jadavpur University ragging incident that took place last Aug and a repeat of such incidents at the university.

He also added that he will “try to speak to the JU authorities” on the delay in giving punishments but felt that the authority was being influenced by a “particular house”.

“For the past two years, His Excellency at Raj Bhavan has been fighting alone like Don Quixote…but his days are now coming to an end. As per the Supreme Court’s directive, a search committee will be formed that will be led by a former chief justice of India. I believe that the prevailing trend in Jadavpur University can be curbed and the problems can be resolved after that,” said Basu.

A first-year student, who was a victim of ragging, died after falling from the second-floor balcony of the A2 block of the Main Hostel last year. The internal probe panel recommended punishments to those found guilty but no show-cause notices have been served yet.

The minister also advised the student community to be sympathetic towards juniors. He said: “I would also like to tell the student community to think about your parents, your family and be sympathetic towards juniors and love them.”
