• Stick to closing time, cops tell bars

  • Kolkata: In the wake of the Anandapur bar brawl, the police brass has asked the local police stations in charge of EM Bypass stretches to ensure that the pubs close on time at night.

According to cops, the bar from where the vandalism was reported had a run-in with law enforcers barely a few months ago for violating the closing time rules. “We have given strict instructions to all bar owners to follow rules as per their licences. The violators will be reported to the excise department,” said an officer.

Lalbazar has formed teams – comprising officers from the East, Southeast and Jadavpur divisions along with the detective department — to ensure that no criminal activities are carried out in and around the pubs. The team will also help the ARS to identify anyone carrying weapons and keep the activities of the local syndicates under watch.

While the main accused in the latest vandalism has been arrested, the reason behind the rampage was not clear. Cops suspect an old dispute might be the triggering point. “Prima facie, it seems that the accused had got into an altercation with the bar staff a couple of days ago over the closing time of the pub. It is alleged that during the argument, Sanjay Das — the accused — and his associates had started thrashed the staff but they were bumped off by the bouncers. Sanjay had sworn to take revenge,” said an officer.
