  • A wagon of a goods train derailed near Rangapani station in New Jalpaiguri Rail Division on Wednesday, an official of the North-East Frontier Railway said, adding that there was no report of any injury or fatality in the incident.  “The empty petroleum wagon, part of the goods train, was headed for Rangapani when it jumped the tracks at 11.45 am. Railway personnel cleared the tracks by promptly removing the derailed wagon,” NFR CPRO Sabyasachi De told reporters. He further said that there was no disruption in the railway traffic movement in the region.

Following the accident at Phansidewa/Rangapani area in North Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed “deep concern” over the incident. “Another rail accident today, in the same Phansidewa/Rangapani area in North Bengal, where there was a most tragic accident just six weeks back! We are very concerned about what is happening!!,” the CM posted on her social media handle on X.

The incident comes 44 days after a train accident in the same region, where three coaches of the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express had derailed on June 17, after a goods train collided with it. At least 10 people died in the accident and over 40 were injured.

Additionally, on Tuesday, two persons were killed after 18 coaches of the Howrah-Mumbai Mail derailed in Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district.

Meanwhile, TMC slammed Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for his remarks stating  that the country is working on developing bullet trains and demanded that he should be held accountable for the recent train accidents.  “Train journeys have now turned into nightmares… entire railway infrastructure has collapsed. They couldn’t even uphold the advancements made by Mamata Banerjee during her tenure as railway minister…,” Ghosh said at a press conference in Kolkata.
