  • Kolkata’s maximum temperature was 31.6˚ C on Sunday KOLKATA: Despite a partially cloudy sky, the city remained mostly dry on Sunday. While similar conditions are likely to prevail on Monday as well, the Met officials are hopeful of rain revival and thunderstorm activities from Tuesday. Meanwhile, the mercury is expected to climb up slightly but not breach the normal mark.

Around 30 mm of rainfall received between Friday night and Saturday has pushed the August rain count to 91.7 mm in Kolkata.According to IMD estimate, under normal conditions the city should get 51.3 mm of rain in the first four days of the month. The city so far has a rain surplus of around 79% for the month.

"Monday is likely to be similar to Sunday. Even if it rains on Monday, it will be passing showers. Some western districts may get some heavy rain spells," said HR Biswas, head of the weather section at Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.

Incessant rain has pulled the maximum temperature four notches below normal on Thursday. Even as Kolkata did not get significant rain on Saturday, dark clouds had ensured the maximum temperature to lay three notches below normal at 29.2˚C. On Sunday, it surged to 31.6˚C, but stayed 0.4 degrees below normal.

The depression over north Jharkhand and neighbourhood has now moved over to the central part of India with no impact on Bengal.
