• BJP MP talks to Centre on theatre grants

  • Kolkata: After at least 26 theatre groups from Bengal were dropped from the Union ministry of culture’s repertory grant, BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP Samik Bhattacharya has taken up the issue with the ministry to restore the fund given to some of the state’s well-known theatre groups.

The grant given to hundreds of theatre groups across India is aimed at providing financial assistance to cultural organisations of different genres of performing arts including theatre groups, music ensembles and children’s theatre.

“It is unfortunate that groups like Sayak or Sansriti have been dropped from the list. I am a theatre enthusiast and have been watching their performances for decades. These groups depend a lot on the grants given by the centre and there must have been some misunderstanding. I have taken up the issue with the ministry,” the MP said.
