  • Kolkata: Two more have been arrested in connection with the bar violence incident off E M Bypass last week. Saugata Sengupta alias Tepa and Sushanta Ghosh alias Lambu were picked up on Saturday night from the Pora Basti area of Anandapur, taking the total number of people arrested in this case to nine. Investigators said the arrests were made based on CCTV footage.

Around 11.30 pm on Monday, 14-15 armed criminals vandalized a bar near Tagore Park off E M Bypass. They also vandalized four cars and several bikes. Inside the bar, the gang used sticks, rods and even axes to wreak havoc.

Police said the hooliganism owed its genesis to an incident that took place a few days ago, when a local syndicate, holding a meeting regarding the “transfer of a plot”, had requested for drinks after 2 am. After the bar authorities refused to oblige, a commotion ensued and the employees were threatened.

The criminals have been charged with stringent BNS sections of attempt to murder and Section 9 of The West Bengal Maintenance of Public Property Act, which attract a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and a minimum sentence of 10 years in prison if proved guilty.
