  • Kolkata: The Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) has planned to build vehicular underpasses at four major intersections of New Town. The authorities have also planned to engage a consultant for conducting a detailed traffic survey and prepare a feasibility study for the project. “The plan is that large vehicles like buses will move on the upper road surface and cars and other small vehicles will be bypassed through the underpasses,” said an official. The four proposed locations for the underpasses are the intersections at Westin, Shrachi More, Noapara (between Chinar Park and City Centre II) and at Chinar Park.

Currently, the township has only one vehicular underpass at Biswa Bangla gate crossing. Besides, there are six pedestrian subways at different points of the main arterial road. The survey and feasibility study will be conducted in three parts. In the first part, the consultant will conduct a physical survey of all the four proposed intersections and their adjoining areas, taking into account the topography and underground utilities. There will also be a 24-hour traffic survey for seven consecutive days in all the four intersections. The consultant will also propose a proper drainage system during and after construction of the underpasses.

After submission of the feasibility study, the consultant will need to conduct soil tests and prepare structural design, vetted by reputed institutes, and submit a detailed project report. Thereafter, periodical site visits will be held during the construction period and drawings of the project will be submitted. Over one lakh vehicles move over the four-point Narkelbagan and Chinar Park crossings daily, revealed a HIDCO study some years back.
