The tremors were reportedly felt at 6.57 am and its epicentre was at a depth of 10 km below the ground, a spot two kilometres away from Soreng town in West Sikkim.
People across the affected areas panicked, coming out of their homes. However, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage.
Sikkim is a high-risk area in terms of earthquakes. The state was hit by a 6.9 magnitude earthquake on September 18, 2011, killing more than 100 people and causing extensive property damage.
