  • Two days after the horrific rape and murder of a young woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital came to light, the West Bengal government on Sunday removed hospital superintendent Sanjay Vashisth. Prof Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, Dean of Student Affairs, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, has been given the additional charge of the superintendent.

The removal came amid a growing outcry over the incident, with junior doctors staging a cease-work protest demanding justice for their deceased colleague. The strike has severely disrupted patient care, forcing the hospital administration to cancel leave for all staff.

A civic volunteer has been arrested in connection with the crime, but the protests show no signs of abating. Medical services have been crippled since Saturday, causing immense hardship to patients seeking treatment.

The incident has sparked outrage not just in West Bengal, but also across the country. The Federation of Resident Doctors’ Association has announced suspension of multiple services on Monday, while the National Doctors’ Association has called for a nationwide protest on Tuesday.

The brutal murder of the doctor has raised serious questions about the security and working conditions at the hospital. A massive police contingent has been deployed on the campus to maintain order as the protests continue.
