RG Kar’s tryst with destiny: Mob of men goes on rampage as women march for justice in peace

A mob of men with sticks broke police barricades, entered the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital premises, overturned a police vehicle and smashed up things in front of TV cameras even as thousands of women marched peacefully in the streets of Calcutta demanding justice for the young doctor raped and murdered in that hospital.
The vandalism at RG Kar happened even though a large posse of police and RAF was deployed at the hospital.
Police have fired teargas to dispel the mob. At least one policeman has been injured after the police took on the goons. The police and the mob are fighting pitched battles.
The violence and vandalism stand out in stark contrast with the peaceful protests going on across large parts of Calcutta and Bengal, raising inevitable questions about who stands to gain if the protests turn violent.
A police source said 32 selected local goons from Belgachia slum had been hired for this planned action.
