  • A two-member National Commission for Women (NCW) committee looking into the rape and murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata has flagged the inadequate security and poor facilities at the hospital and the lapses in the police investigation.

The committee comprising NCW member Delina Khongdup and advocate Soma Chaudhary submitted its preliminary findings on Friday.

The report highlights a shocking lack of security at the hospital, particularly during night shifts. No security guards were present at the time of the incident, the report says, adding that the overall security arrangements for on-call interns, doctors, and nurses on the night shift were found to be inadequate.

The report also stated that the hospital lacked basic amenities for women doctors and nurses with the washrooms in a poor condition, no security measures in these areas and inadequate lighting.

The committee also said that the questioning of Sandeep Ghosh, former principal of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital who resigned following the incident, is incomplete and urged authorities to expedite this process. Ghosh was questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation on Friday.

Expressing deep concern for the safety of women medical professionals, the NCW called for immediate and stringent measures to protect on-call interns, nurses, and doctors.

    Doctors’ strike hits OPD services

Meanwhile, the nationwide 24-hour doctors’ strike called by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in protest against the rape and murder of a second-year trainee doctor at R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata disrupted outpatient department (OPD) services across the country. In Kolkata, the epicentre of the agitation, protests continued for the eighth day.

The West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front issued a statement on Saturday saying that OPD and emergency services were “operating efficiently” and there was no reason to believe that “access to medical care” had been compromised.

The association also raised several demands, including the arrest of all culprits in the case, action against several hospital authorities, a CBI probe into the allegations of evidence tampering etc.
